As most of my RL friends probably know, I've spent a portion of my summer so far volunteering as a rabbit socializer at the local humane society. However, that all came to an abrupt halt recently, as they expanded the volunteer dress code to be the same as the staff dress code.

Now, the old volunteer dress code made sense. It was put in place to ensure the safety of the volunteers and the animals, and so that no one looked like a complete slob. The new changes are all completely superficial, and meant to make the volunteers look just like the staff, and I find it all completely ridiculous. It's not just the restrictions on hair color that bug me (although that would be my main issue, as my hair is quite blue at the moment), but restrictions on makeup, jewelery, headwear, embellishment on pants (????).
No one in the shelter, not the customers or staff, has commented negatively on my hair or appearance, or given the impression that they disapproved. I have given my time to them freely, and I don't want to feel limited like this.

So anyways, I resigned today. I don't want to deal with this kind of crap right now, and I don't have to.

I really loved working with the bunnies, and I'd like to think I was good at it. I got to know each of the rabbits that came through the shelter: their names, personalities, attitudes. I was also the only rabbit socializer that came in consistently over the past few months. If you opened up the information on any of the rabbits there, chances are the majority of their interaction cards were filled out by me.

No matter how much I love the animals, though, at this point in time I'm not willing to put myself in a situation where I'm made to feel like I'm back in high school. Not when I'm just trying to help.

Sorry, I just had to vent. I'm incredibly sad right now.

I felt the same way when they tried to outlaw shorts where I worked at a warehouse. The warehouse wasn't air conditioned, but the data entry half where my desk was, was. They didn't care that I spent half my time carrying boxes into the warehouse anyway. Thankfully they didn't go through with the change. We never even saw customers! Who cares!

Exactly! I barely see the people who come through because they tend to avoid the places where people are working. Even if they did, I highly doubt my blue hair and embroidered jeans were "freakin' out the squares" or whatever the problem is. Gah.
